Alexander Mearns
I first played competitive tennis in Lusaka, Zambia when I was 12 years old. In fact, I am still in touch with my first competitive tennis coach. Though I have gone on to significantly improve my tennis game in competitive match play and rigorous training academies, I have grown to love tennis not only for its adrenaline-boosting “tweener” shots, but for its power to unite. If elected Vice-President of the UCL Tennis Society, I will maintain the Society as the place for any and everyone to pick up a racket and form lasting connections with other students. As I borrow the lessons of my first tennis coach in Lusaka, who founded the nonprofit Serving Zambia to connect Zambian children of varying socioeconomic backgrounds through tennis, I will use the position of Vice-President to ensure the UCL Tennis Society uses the game of tennis as a tool for social outreach. Using my experience in the nonprofit space, I will make certain that not only does the UCL Tennis Society see even greater engagement across the student community, but beyond UCL for the betterment of London following the harsh impact of COVID-19. Having been elected varsity team captain for my high school tennis, squash and cross-country teams, I am confident I will be able to help lead the society and encourage as much society participation as possible regardless of previous tennis experience. I vow to give to the UCL Tennis Society as much as tennis has given to me. Join me in an exciting new chapter for UCL Tennis.
