Some of you may have been dead set against a career in surgery since your first day of medical school, whilst others may have seen the start of clinical years as an opportunity to experience what surgical specialties are like. As a clinical student representative, I believe it is extremely important to tailor events to the needs and interests of all students. Making the society welcoming and as valuable as possible to all students is key, regardless of their level of interest in surgery.
I hope to provide a platform for students where they can suggest events, year-round, they would be enthusiastic to see and get involved with. Organising events that students find beneficial within their clinical years and involving them to carry out their vision, with the support of the committee, allows the student body to feel more integrated within the society and helps them towards achieving their long-term career goals.
Furthermore, I hope to introduce more events focused on early surgical careers and the first steps clinical students need to take to pursue their interests in surgery. This includes ideas such as small group workshops whereby students can receive targeted advice on optimising their portfolio/CV in line with their surgical interests, events focusing on how to make the most of our remaining time at medical school and helping to better prepare members for life as a junior doctor/core surgical trainee.
