Hi, I’m Aswathikutty, and I’m running for Student Parents and Carers Society: Welfare Officer and would really appreciate your vote!
I would like to take up this role partly because I have shared and lived the same academic and personal experiences, and partly because have heard of many examples of how student carers’ have found the academic journey quite lonely and daunting. I want to make sure that carers needs are heard and that every carer can learn in a supportive environment.
I want to focus on:
1) Need assessment in the light of Covid-19: Understanding the needs of student carers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic
2) Wellbeing support: To ensure that student carers receive full access to the same support services as any other student.
3) Academic support: To help those who have difficulty meeting deadlines, attending classes, or coping with work placements
4) Financial support: To make sure that everyone is aware of the student funds support that is available to them from early on and help with understanding if they are eligible for benefits or to provide general advice with budgeting
5) Childcare support: To signpost carers to childcare provisions and tools available to identify the childcare facilities and breastfeeding areas.
6) Inclusive events: To arrange events that incorporate families considering disabilities, accessibility and child friendly nature.
