My overall aims as anaesthetics chair would be to create resources for post-medical school applications in alliance with other chairs, increase publicity and information for anaesthesia, and work with other specialty chairs to run events for certain subspecialties!

Having attended several events in which I have learned the structure of the training process, which still eludes a fair few people, I would like to create transparency through creating a resource which details what exactly happens when you apply for specialty training, and what “counts” for the portfolio. I’d like to do this in collaboration with the other chairs, before collating the information and finding patterns within the points system, before producing an easily accessible document in order to level the playing field.

Working with other chairs for certain events would also be great, as I believe that through collaboration, we could successfully set up events which have been very popular in other medical schools for certain subspecialties, for example Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine.

I’d also like to improve publicity for the Anaesthetics Subcommittee by setting up an Instagram account and ensuring that we promote our events well. Having worked as publicity officer for RUMS Music and UCL Sexpression, I believe that I could oversee this project successfully.

Overall, I believe that I could make a difference as Anaesthetics Chair and would aim to ensure that we all improve by working together.

My name is Em and I’m currently in Y3. I’m running for Anaesthetics Chair because I’m passionate about a career in anaesthetics and want to ensure that all students are able to explore this amazing specialty and hopefully be inspired to pursue it themselves!

My role as General Secretary for UCL Bioethics has given me great experience of promoting and running engaging events, and I promise to deliver an amazing new programme of talks and lectures. This will include a session on building an anaesthetics portfolio, an introductory talk for pre-clinical students, guest speaker events to explore the wide variety of anaesthetics careers, and revision lectures for clinical years!

As Deputy Lead for the Be The Change QI Initiative, I have developed strong organisation and communication skills; I plan to use these to introduce an anaesthetics journal club, which will offer you the chance to meet other students and make friends, whilst also learning about the latest research in anaesthetics!

In addition, having gained experience as Finance/Sponsorship Officer for the highly successful Women In Surgery Conference, my most ambitious goal for the year is to deliver the first National Undergraduate Anaesthetics and Perioperative Care Conference! This would offer an amazing opportunity to showcase anaesthetics as a specialty and also for students to become involved in the work of UCL MedSoc.

Thank you for reading my statement and PLEAVE VOTE FOR ME to be your Anaesthetics Chair!
