This past year has seen the contradictions of capitalism exposed to an unparalleled extent; we are living in a time of global crisis and, therefore, revolutionary potential. For students and young people, we are facing mass unemployment, a mental health pandemic and a housing crisis that capitalism is not only unable to deal with, but is the root cause of. Only revolutionary socialism can provide these necessary solutions. It is my firm belief that there has never been a more important time to spread the ideas of Marx, build the forces of Marxism and grow as an organisation.
Our role within UCL must be to fight back against the commodification and marketisation of higher education and link our struggle to the struggles of the exploited working class that exist within this university. This includes everyone from our outsourced cleaning staff, who have witnessed callous cuts to their hours amidst this global pandemic, to our academics and lecturers, who have seen over a 20% real-terms pay decrease in the last eleven years.
This past year, being involved with the UCL Marxist society whilst also playing an organising role within two rent strike campaigns, has reaffirmed to me the importance of ensuring that our praxis is not just informed by, but is guided by Marxist theory. Our understanding of this makes us a uniquely powerful force within the student movement.
I hope to help grow our presence on campus and encourage more people to join the struggle against capitalism.
