Duncan Raitt
Hello, I am Duncan, I am a PhD student in mechanical engineering and would like to be your president next year.
I have experience in many university society committees including the UCL Hiking Club. In other clubs, I have been; President, Trip Secretary, Equipment Officer and B-Team Captain. Whilst over the last 2 years at UCL Hiking Club I have been Marketing Officer and Treasurer. This gives me an enhanced understanding of running university clubs and working with the union.
Whilst working as treasurer over the last year I have pushed for several changes in the club, including:
• A system for more accessible, understandable and consistent hike grading.
• Changes to the committee and constitution to make roles clearer.
• A more comprehensive risk assessment.
• Increased interaction with external hiking institutions and a push to teach hiking etiquette.
I have also run walk leader training and club navigation training videos.
If elected president my priority would be to ensure we have a well trained and reliable group of walk leaders so we can resume in person walks safely and reliably once they are allowed, and to keep knowledge passing between generations in the club.
I plan to run the club through delegation to the committee whilst remaining a reliable source of communication between the members, the committee and the union.
