I am also a current CAS member and UCL VegSoc Committee member, committed to the environment.
Effective climate action can only be achieved through the integration of the public into research; I would like to become a bridge that connects public and science, encouraging society members to do the same thus reducing alienation. I learnt about climate impacts and global changes after interviewing UCL Climate Professor Christopher Rapley. My multicultural background gives me an unbiased impression of others, broadened by experiences like a 10-week volunteering mission in rural Uganda.
The role of Greenough president would be hugely benefited by the numerous skills I obtained there; I came across many sensitive situations, requiring me to be commiserate towards others’ needs, read social cues and respect everyone’s beliefs.
Journalistic writing has made me articulate and able to encapsulate prominent issues while keeping individuals heard and included.
As a final display of my passion, I was recently accepted to participate in the 2041 ClimateForce Antarctica Expedition where I hope to gain strong global connections with fellow adventurers and bring awareness to climate issues. Upon my return, I will start a community engagement project with local bodies like the Castlehaven Community Association. My role would provide a gateway for UCL students to become more involved with the community, educate others, and learn themselves.
20/21 wasn't a real year, so I am running for a second term as President of the Greenough Society in the hope of a glimpse of normality. My dreams haven't changed much since last and I, in addition to hitting the dancefloor at Glittoris (1st-years: you'll learn), hope to make more exciting academic events, weekend field trips and resume the much-needed socials. Oh yeah, and free coffee in the common room (COVID-safe oc(?))!
I hope you'll join the adventure, and see you in London!
Cheers,
Tor
