As a ‘covid fresher’ having a zoom version of drama this year has only made me more excited for its return post-pandemic. Being involved as Assistant Head of Design for the Odyssey, and attending online show streamings and workshops ran by the society has been a welcome respite! Social media can make such a difference to one’s reach and impact, and I’d love to be Head of Marketing and PR to further tap into this. To communicate all that the society has to offer I’d like to look at having show takeovers of social media, perhaps sharing backstage content, or showing the earlier process of development. As well as this I’d like to ensure we have a presence on all social media platforms, perhaps even expanding onto tiktok (!) with more casual posting and contributions from our members. Also, I’d like to try to expand our visibility by promoting ourselves through other societies, perhaps through collaboration or each sharing the others upcoming events. Off social media, I think the online archive of The Odyssey this year could be applied to post-pandemic shows and would be a really exciting way to continue to leave a digital presence, and mean we don’t fully have to leave shows behind! I believe I have a good understanding of what engages people on social media, and of what people want to see, and would use my experiences collaborating to make sure the whole society was represented by our online presence.

Between the pandemic and a change of degree (history to comparative literature) you could say that my two years at UCL have been quite the chaotic ride, but one of the few constants I’ve been able to rely on from fresher’s week up to now were the creative opportunities offered by Drama Society. In my time as an active member I’ve learnt that whether you want to act, direct, produce or just try something entirely new it’s important to stay updated on what auditions, shows and opportunities are coming up in order to take a break from academic work and explore your creativity through drama. As Head of Marketing and Public Relations my priority would be to make our social media presence as accessible and engaging as possible, so that everyone from freshers to post-grads can find all the information they need and make it work within their schedule to make the most of it. Thinking back, I know how daunting it can be to join a new society, especially in your first year, so alongside our informative posts I would like to engage with newcomers through our social media presence and hear directly from them what content or information they want to see on our pages.
