Being on the Drama Society committee has been such a wonderful learning experience for me I am running again for Head of Design!

This time round, having in person shows I would completely redefine this position in the society, from reorganising and making the costume cupboard more accessible, to having more of a voice for next year’s engagement of students.

Having worked on many different productions within the Students’ Union and the university gives me great knowledge and advantage for this position, which allows me to only look forward and progress.

The most important things I would get sorted is more student engagement and opportunities for their participation, and to promote the society’s artistic side with even more workshops and creative design elements. Ultimately to have it be one of the leading arts societies within the union.

Over the last year we’ve seen the importance of drama and theatre in people’s lives and I want this new year to really be an exploration of what we missed out on, and more importantly to make it live up to everything people haven’t had in so long!!

As a ‘covid fresher’, the limitations on the arts this year has only made me more excited for post-pandemic drama. Designing and collaborating gives me a buzz like nothing else. Bouncing ideas off each other and the process of refining a design, whilst one of the most draining things is also one of the most rewarding. I’d love to be Head of Design to share this excitement with others and use it to complement the incredible acting we see every year. Despite this year’s restrictions, I’ve been able to get a taste of drama as Assistant Head of Design for The Odyssey, as well as through workshops and online show streamings. I have experience in costume, as a costume member of National Youth Theatre, and specialising in fashion during art foundation. I also have an understanding of professional theatre, through shadowing backstage technicians at my local theatre, and understand how your whole body and soul seems to go into a show (!) as I designed and led a team to produce the set and costumes for four shows before coming to London this year. I would love to further collaborate with other societies and share resources, such as looking into joining with MODO fashion society to deliver workshops on sewing, and give more people the confidence to design for themselves. Also, The Odyssey saw the creation of an online archive, and I would love to see the creative team leave a digital presence and explanation of some of their designs and processes in future shows.
