My first year at UCL has certainly not been one that I was anticipating - my contact with others during online university has been limited to long Zoom seminars and awkward breakout rooms. This has been quite an isolating experience, however I found that the UCL ABSOC provided the space for us to have online events and meet new people during lockdown. Growing up, my Shia identity has been a vital part of me but I haven’t had many opportunities to meet other young Shias. So, it has meant a lot for me to meet others who also apply the teachings of the Ahlulbayt (a) to their daily lives.
The Welfare Officer is an integral position within the committee as they ensure the wellbeing of all members. I am running as Welfare Officer as I have seen first-hand how important it is, particularly right now, to check up on others. A little ‘how are you?’ can go a long way! Also, I would like to participate in organising ABSOC events as it would be a pleasure to give back to the society. My priority would be to ensure everyone is happy with the committee’s decisions and I would like to present myself as a friendly and approachable face to turn to if there are any problems, and to rely on to fix them. My past experience in my sixth form’s Mental Health Network has helped me understand how to reach out and support those who require it, as well as how to efficiently communicate and collaborate in a team. Inshallah I hope to use these skills, if elected, in my role as the Welfare Officer.
