Hi! I’m Rachel and I’m running for Vice President. ABACUS definitely stands out to me amongst other societies in UCL. Hearing about the amazing events the committee hosts, from the flagship boat party to bubble football, just shows how committed ABACUS is in creating fun events for students to take part in. Having been to school in both Hong Kong and the UK, I understand the potential shock some may feel when living independently in a new environment. Especially with COVID-19, some may feel alienated when attending school online. Being part of a unique year group means I would be able to relate to the struggles our cohort is facing and organise events that cater to their needs. Part of what I aim to bring to ABACUS as VP is to create a strong sense of belonging among Asian students in London through curating more inter-university events so students from UCL get to be part of a bigger community in London. I also strive to work alongside the president to listen to what members would like to see from ABACUS through more surveys and meet-ups. Further, I’d like to continue the mentorship programme where committee members and second years could be in frequent communication with freshers. Above all, I strive to continue the legacy of ABACUS as being a vibrant and welcoming society where members feel at home.
