Hi everyone! My name is Nicole and I am currently a first year IT Management and Business student. I would be extremely grateful to have the opportunity to be the general secretary for ABACUS. As someone that has struggled with being a third culture kid, I strongly value how the club represents a safe haven for many other Asian and non-Asian people that have multiple cultural identities. I also love creativity, design, and experimenting with different art forms, so I hope to utilise my art skills as a general secretary to design and advertise the many events ABACUS will be holding next year. Additionally, I have had previous experiences in handling social media accounts for different brands and events, and I hope to utilise these skills to improve ABACUS’ online presence.

Despite the pandemic and all that has happened this year, I hope that we will all have the opportunity to meet and have fun together in person by 2022! As the general secretary, I will (most importantly) ensure that everyone feels included and updated on all the activities that are happening in the coming year. I hope to see you all soon, and thank you for reading :)

Hey, Isabella here, running for General Secretary!

Yes, that is me in my picture with my Billie Eilish-esque jacket and yes, I did Photoshop that. 😎 Besides my photoshop skills (that I clearly put to good use), here are some reasons you should vote for me.

Having been that “artsy” kid my whole life, I’ve always loved creating and designing graphics. Of course, this will translate to the work that I create for ABACUS. (@eatsoapandcry on IG to see some fun work!) I am proficient in using tools like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe XD, Procreate, and dabble in video editing software, so you can be sure that we’ll have the sickest merchandise and ticket designs. 🤪

I also love working with people on a team, and have experience coordinating large events, having organised an international student summit, managed a volunteering initiative of 60+ people, and being a transition mentor with UCL.

Above all, I strongly believe in ABACUS’ ability to create a home away from home. Arriving in London and suddenly becoming a minority is an experience that many have gone through, including me, and it can be isolating and scary. There’s something special about connecting with other asians, be it over missing actual good food (sorry, I’m an asian food snob 🤧) or SAD memes. This is all the more important in a time like this, when asians have been disproportionately targeted with racism and bigotry. It would be an honour to be part of the committee that builds this valuable community. 💛
