Events planning and organising has been something I’ve also been allocated to do for school, friends and family. I managed to organise a Leavers Party last summer in HK for all the HK students from my college as a substitute to the graduation that we should have gotten in the UK. I managed to sort out a team of friends to help, delegating tasks, contacting food caterers, sourcing venues, as well as preparing a surprise souvenir for everyone. This was a big task which also placed immense pressure on me to make it perfect for everyone to remember and treasure forever. Safe to say, it was a big success - my communication, organisational and leadership skills have been enhanced by this experience. Other than being the main organiser, I have also learnt that teamwork and collaboration is the most important element to a successful event, which is why I will be actively listening to advice and feedback from ABACUS members, and reflect that in the planning and organising process. Lastly, being an aspiring Lawyer, my negotiation and interpersonal skills will allow events to be conducted within our budget without compromising the quality and excitement of it all. With me as the Events Director, I ensure and promise you that UCL ABACUS will be able to host the best events, best venues, and bring smiles to everyone’s faces.

During these unprecedented times, do you find it challenging to meet people? As someone who hasn’t even been on campus yet, I certainly have. Therefore, I believe the role of an events director in creating a place to form strong bonds and friendships in a safe environment is incredibly essential for freshers, as well as across various year groups.
Prior to University, I was in charge of organising an annual Christmas event for a company. With my experience in event planning, I understand the process of arranging events and effectively working as part of a team; with having to interact with committee members, managers, and fellow students to enhance their overall university experience.
My main aim as events director would be to improve the social interaction of our culturally diverse cohort. I will host more social events internally and externally with other London Abacus, such as the iconic boat party, enabling freshers to connect, remember and most importantly, enjoy. I also want to promote the Asian culture within the UK, hence, I will organise events that integrate other UCL Asian societies (Singapore society, Malaysian society), such as hosting clubbing events, dinner gatherings, karaoke, poker, and mahjong game nights.

Hi, I'm Caitlin, a first-year Economics student! As someone with friends in universities across London, I understand how fun it is to be able to attend events with people outside of the society, and so if I were your Events Director, I would love to organise more collab events with the Abacus societies all over London in addition to the monthly clubbing event and other UCL societies (most likely involving lots of food!) The pandemic has also stopped our year from being as fun as it should have and so, as a fresher who missed out big time, I want to ensure all our events next year make up for it. Over the past couple of years, I've organised and taught art classes weekly at my local library to the public on top of arranging many house events at my school as a prefect, meaning I am extremely comfortable with planning and executing events. I've also grown up in London so I know all the best food places and want to host events at only the tastiest restaurants here.
Vote for me if you love to eat :)
