Candidates

Priyam Deka
Hi , I'm Priyam and I believe that Sustainability and environmental protection are topics that are important to be tackled in the face of climate change. Each individual, each company, each household, each institution and each university can contribute
The topics that I want to tackle are:

1. The individual impact on our environment

I want to encourage environmental dialogue, awareness and education on how we can include more sustainable choices in our daily life focusing on:

Agriculture and food systems (and how our diet type impacts global warming and climate change)
Transport

The education on these topics would take place in form of talks, events, seminars at university as well as the Green and Blue Space.

2. Food waste

Food waste is an important issue, not only regarding climate change, but also food security in a growing population. The project planned for the topic of food waste is the introduction of an application called “Too Good To Go” in which aims to connect food businesses to customers buy selling their leftover meals for a reduced price at the end of the day.

3. Recycling

Even though a lot has already been done at university, there is a lot of space for improvement. Many initiatives and projects are already being pushed forward especially regarding:

The equipment for recycling in student halls (bins, food caddies, signs, etc.)
The labelling and positioning of waste bins at university
The education on h
Heloise Lepinard
Hi everyone! I am Heloise. As a member of the student sustainability council, I take part in the discussion around sustainability at UCL. In my previous school, I used to be the sustainability eco-leader and I intend to transfer my experience and skills to the role of sustainability officer. Here are my objectives:
- Ensure the union makes decisions considering the environment
- Represent the student’s body at the union meetings
- Implement a buffet in the cafés with choices of organic vegan and gluten free cheap food served in reusable plates
- Run the student sustainability council
- Make UCL a lab for sustainable projects by organizing hackathons where students are challenged to resolve environmental issues
- Raise awareness on solutions to climate change in different areas through workshops and conferences with experts on relational ecology, permaculture, sustainable fashion, hydrogen cars… These events will be designed to help you find practical tips to live a more sustainable life
- Give students the opportunity to share their research and knowledge on sustainability by organizing the third edition of the sustainability in our city conference
I will support students willing to engage in environmental actions and will attend Environmental Collective meetings
Arpana Giritharan
Hi! My name is Arpana and I am running to be your Sustainability Officer.

An Environment and Climate Emergency was declared in the UK earlier last year which highlights the urgency for everyone to adopt sustainable practices to collectively make a difference.
As UCL has one of the largest student bodies, we play an instrumental role in driving sustainable innovation and addressing environmental issues.

I plan to test our ability to halt environmental destruction by:
- Cutting down the use of single-use plastics in SU cafés
- Ensuring kits for sports clubs and UCL merchandise are made from sustainable sourced materials
- Making sure waste material is correctly divided and disposed of
- Conducting workshops to train clubs and societies on how to run events more sustainably and encouraging them by introducing a 'Most Sustainable Club/Society' Award
- Lobbying UCL to improve its environmental practices
- Engaging with students to identify further ways to develop and implement sustainable practices on and off campus
- Introduce a Sustainability section on the monthly newsletter

I have always had an affinity towards environmental issues as I grew up in Sri Lanka, surrounded by nature. I have volunteered with environmental organisations and completed courses on conservation and I am well-versed in environmental issues. If elected, I will try my best to ensure UCL is more sustainable which will in turn improve everyone's quality of life.
Eliza Lawless
Hi! I’m Eliza, a passionate environmentalist and occasional tree hugger.

My main goal as Sustainability Officer is to increase sustainable options in SU outlets and to increase awareness of the existing sustainability strategies.

I would like to:

- Have more water taps available
- Use fewer plastic cups in Union bars
- Increase packaging free food options in the Union
- Produce a termly sustainability newsletter for all students
- Increase vegetarian and vegan food options on campus
- Increase visibility of existing union efforts, e.g. by incorporating the map of UCL water fountains into the UCL Go app

I hope that as the Sustainability Officer, I will be able to bring about real change for UCL, the students and the environment!

Follow my instagram account @anto4sustainableucl. You should vote for me if you have already thought « damn, we are all going to die » while buying another plastic bottle. I did the same, and I understand the complexity of sustainability, the dilemma between a direct or a future benefits. My aim through this job is to promote dialogue at all-scales and have open-minded and critical debates. As a sustainability officer I would support initiatives that promote an innovative vision of sustainability within debates and discussions.
To that matter we should:
Re-use - promote UCL achievements. UCL is a model of eco-friendly campus. We need to be confident that change is possible, while maintaining our high standard. I would support the improvement of established initiatives.
Re-cycle - enhance debate at all scales. We need to create a virtuous circle of reflexion among students, academics and staffs. What would be the future according to the current sustainability requirements. I would support projects that inform students about the curent stakes of sustainability and reflect on solutions.
Re-think - promote innovation. We need to go further. I would support projects that present new ideas that encompass social, environmental and economical matters.
Why me? I ambitious and driven. I like to defend ideas. I like to listen to people.
