WHO AM I?

My name is Iona Cunningham-Eurich, a 2nd year Zoology student. I started horse-riding when I was 8 years old and competed up to a National level in show-jumping.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN THE UCL HORSE RIDING CLUB

I have been on the UCL Horse Riding Club BUCS 1st team for two years and I am the current Horse Riding Club President.

WHY DO I WANT TO BE PRESIDENT?

Having been President for the last year, I know how a Presidency and the Student’s Union function. This means I would be a lot more efficient upon starting a second year of Presidency as I already know the ropes.

Being President has been time consuming and sometimes stressful, yet the accomplishing various tasks within the club allowing UCL students to learn how to horse-ride has been very fulfilling. I believe that I would be able to improve both myself, as President, and therefore the club, as I know what needs to be done and improved.

AIMS FOR 2018-2019

Club

• Put a system into place that allows Beginners to ride for 1 full hour and not 30 minutes. Due to problems with leader numbers this year, this was impossible, however I would work towards asking Intermediate or Novice riders to help.

• Try to organise occasional hacking on weekends – although this remains difficult as London is extremely expensive.

• Insure that the Wales trip is on a Weekend and not during the week.

• Try to organise jumping lessons for Intermediates – this however has been rendered difficult due to the fact that Lee Valley do not rent out body-protectors anymore. I would therefore try to buy body protectors for UCL students in the 1st term

Teams

• Change the running of trials: a more intense session with fewer people

• Make sure that the teams are complete: this would help both the club (leading Beginners) and our BUCS results.

• Organise lessons in other clubs on occasion, e.g. Trent Park.

• Allow advanced riders unable to join teams to join team lessons when there is an available place

Socials

• Work with the Social Secretary to organise more social events, for example meals, Sportsnite…

• Organise Theoretical Lessons on Wednesdays when Riding lessons are cancelled, and build this into a social event. I started this initiative in the 2nd term of 2017-2018 and it has proved useful.

• More volunteering and fundraising: we were slow to start this year, but it is coming into effect and I would hope to start earlier next year
