On Wednesday 14 June, the Students’ Union held the Zero Tolerance To Sexual Harassment Awards to celebrate the work of departments over the past year in creating a Zero Tolerance environment at UCL.

Thirty departments across UCL successfully implemented all elements of the pledge and received the award, doubling the number of departments who achieved the award in 2015/16. Over the induction period departments, in conjunction with the Students’ Union, organised 180 Active Bystander Workshops, training over 3500 students. This is the greatest number of incoming students who have ever been trained to be active bystanders since the inception of the Zero Tolerance campaign in 2014. Having attended the training students this huge number of student can aid in creating a community of students who understand exactly what constitutes as consent and how they can respond if they witness sexual harassment while at UCL.

Congratulations to each and every department on all of the work they have done to this point on tackling sexual harassment, but it doesn’t stop there!

Applications for Active Bystander workshops are currently open and will close on 30 June, if you are a staff member from a department you can sign up here for Active Bystander Workshops for the 2017 induction period.

If you are a student and you want you believe your department should run workshops this year, please email your Head of Department to tell them! You can also email the Dean of your Faculty to encourage departments to sign up.

A full list of Heads of Department and Deans of Faculties can be found here . You can then search them on the UCL Directory to find their email addresses.

Here’s an example of an email you could send:

Dear [Head of Department],

UCLU has recently launched the new Zero Tolerance to Sexual Harassment pledge for UCL departments for 2017/18. As a student in [Department] I think it’s really important that we sign this pledge, commit to running Active Bystander workshops for new students next year, and stand up to sexual harassment.

[Add specifics on why this is important to you]

Your department will have received an email from the UCLU Women’s Officer informing you about the pledge, and this also includes instructions about how to sign up; or you can email the Women’s Officer at   . I hope that this department will sign and make a commitment to challenging sexual harassment.

Best wishes,

[Name]
