Our Mexican Society have raised £10,500 for the Mexico earthquake appeal, and the fundraising is still under way.

Mexico is facing one of the toughest disasters in recent years. Two strong earthquakes took place on 7 and 19 September (magnitude 8.1 and 7.1 respectively), killing more than 350 people and leaving over 250,000 homeless. The Mexican government and international relief organisations have estimated that the scale of the damages may be up to £7.3 billion.

The quakes also left damages in infrastructure not only in Mexico City but also in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Morelos, Puebla, Tlaxcala and Tabasco. Unfortunately, this region includes some of the most impoverished areas in the country. Even when relief efforts were delivered in the most affected areas, the biggest challenge will be reconstruction of public infrastructure, private housing and infrastructure of small and medium enterprises.

Despite the distance, all of us can contribute to the humanitarian effort and support people in need.

Despite the distance, all of us can contribute to the humanitarian effort and support people in need. Mexican Students and Alumni societies from UK universities have jointly launched a crowdfunding campaign. Our Mexican Society is receiving online donations and running a whole host of fundraising activity to raise money in support of reconstruction efforts in Mexico. Donations will go to the Disaster Fund of the Mexican Red Cross and to local organisations who will support reconstruction efforts in the most affected communities.

Rise Mexico is an initiative by students and alumni from: University College London, University of Cambridge, London School of Economics, University of Glasgow, University of Birmingham, University of Edinburgh, Oxford University, King’s College London, University of Southampton, Imperial College London, Cardiff University, University of Sussex, University of York, University of Leeds and the Society of Mexican Students in the UK.

Join them by planning an activity or making a donation to support Mexico’s reconstruction.
