What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
UCL’s approach to accommodation and housing needs reform.
Students in halls pay too much and get too little while students struggling to find private accommodation feel unsupported. This is why I will work with UCL to:
- Increase support for the UOL Housing Service to make legal advice, the Flatmate Finder and affordable accommodation more accessible
- Reform the UCL's General Regulations to protect students' rights and raise the standard of living
- Expand UCL’s Rent Guarantor Scheme to help more students
- Develop a Green Strategy to make UCL accommodation more sustainable
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?
As the representative for two halls of residence I have seen, first-hand, the flaws in UCL's accommodation policies. I have implemented local reforms to roll back repressive security rules and reduce waiting times for maintenance issues. I am currently working to safely reopen common workspaces and introduce a food waste system to make my halls more sustainable.
I want to take this energy and experience and use it to reform UCL's accommodation problems. I can apply the skills of negotiation, teamwork and leadership that I learned in the Air Cadets and the OTC to make real change happen.
Anything else?
There are many things' students have to worry about, but access to fair and affordable accommodation shouldn't be one. I will bring the commitment and the knowhow to reform UCL's system and make it work for us.
