Name of Event: School Street Closures

Volunteer Role:

We’re looking for volunteers to help the event run smoothly. Tasks would include:

Stewarding

The role of the steward is crucial to ensure the wellbeing and safety of all involved in the School Streets event. Your role would be to close and reopen the road safely, positioning signs and cones according to official guidelines and never exposing yourself to danger from oncoming traffic. You will divert through traffic, guide drivers needing access and ensure that the young people involved in activities stay safely within the closure area.

Monitoring

A key part of the School Streets event is finding out from parents, school staff and local residents what they think. We would like to work with local authorities to encourage more regular school street closures, but can only do this if there is proven public support. You can help us by carrying out short surveys on the day and capturing feedback.

Assisting with street activities

This may include chalk drawing, street games or cycle/scooting challenges.

Photography/Videography

We’re on the lookout for talented photographers and/or videographers who can help us capture the atmosphere of a street that has been transformed into a space for people. Your photos would be used on our national social media channels, website and future promotional materials. Video footage will be compiled to produce a short film showcasing the different events happening across the UK.

This event is useful experience for anyone interested in real change to help combat Climate Change and what that looks like on the ground.

Schools all over the UK will be trialling a ‘School Street’ as part of a nationwide effort to highlight the dangers of air pollution and encourage people to think differently about how they travel to school.

Sustrans is working with schools and local councils across the UK to ease congestion around the school gate, making it safer and cleaner for children, families and local residents at drop-off and pick-up times.

School Streets are short, timed road closures at the start and end of the school day. School run and through traffic is diverted, creating a healthier, more liveable street environment for everyone, while making sure that residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists can still use the road.
