Tuesday 24 September 2019 (All day)

Name of Event: Open Day with a Legal Advice Charity!

Volunteer Role: This opportunity is for current students and alumni of any discipline, interested in learning more about legal practice in social welfare law.

Community Links is a community charity, rooted in East London, providing support and opportunities to thousands of people every year. We have been transforming lives for over 40 years and are founded on two principles: to find new solutions to old problems and to deliver them with the whole community.

We are looking for organised, responsible and tenacious team-players with a can-do attitude, curious about legal practice in the charity sector. You will have the opportunity to shadow our advisers.

The day will be split into two parts.

Morning

It will be an 08:30 start and volunteers will be able to enjoy a continental breakfast. This will be followed by a tour of Community Links which will give volunteers the opportunity to speak to members of different departments in Community Links. This will also give you the chance to hear us talk about the different opportunities that we have to offer.

Volunteers will then be able to see first-hand how the Community Links form filling service works and the work that Community Links does to support the local community. This will entail shadowing advisers whilst they help people make applications for public funds. Many of our clients are vulnerable or may struggle to use technology and advisers provide the necessary support for these people to successfully fill out forms and make important claims. This unique opportunity will allow students to gain an insight into the process.

During form filling you will be working closely with members of the Advice Team in Community Links.  This will provide you with an unparalleled opportunity to meet and impress our team, ahead of our recruitment cycle for Volunteer Paralegals and Trainee Advisers.

This will be followed by a superb lunch paid for by Community Links.

Afternoon

During the second half of the day volunteers will be working in our outbuilding, cataloguing legal files and boxing them before they are taken away for archiving. This will help volunteers to develop the ability to work well within a team as you will be working in groups of up to five.

You will be reimbursed for any reasonable travel expenses.

When: Tuesday 17 and/or Tuesday 24 September

Where: Community Links Trust (Charity), 105 Barking Road, London E15 4HQ

Volunteer Places: 5 volunteers on two separate days.
