It raises some interesting questions about the role of โ€˜Big Pharmaโ€™ in the safeguarding of patients, the issues with private healthcare systems and how drug addicts are viewed by the legal system and law enforcement officers.

In 2017, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) declared that the US was in the grips of a public health emergency. In 2018, approximately 2.0 million US citizens were reported to have an opioid addiction culminating in a daily death-toll of 130+ individuals from 2018 to 2019.

It was in the 1990s that the seed of the opioid crisis was sown. Doctors were sold the myth that opioid use was non-addictive and this led to ever-increasing prescription rates of drugs such as morphine, codeine etc.

Attempts to crack down on the volume of prescription painkiller dispensation has forced addicts to seek their fixes elsewhere, namely from illegal opioids like heroin.

With West Virginia proving to be one of the worst-afflicted US states, join us as we watch Louis Theroux meet addicts and law-enforcement officers living and working there, as they struggle to deal with this addiction of epidemic proportions.

This documentary is only an hour long and, therefore, should offer some time for discussion about the ethical issues that perpetuated this crisis.
