The Russian Echoes of the ‘European refugee crisis’?

When in summer of 2015 hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees were taking a dangerous journey across the Aegean Sea to ‘Europe’ – some embarked on a different route to safety and arrived in Russia. Russia, although an important political player in the Middle East, was not the most likely destination for Syrians fleeing the civil war. This talk tells an unknown story of a Syrian family stranded at the Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow and a group of pro bono Russian refugee lawyers, who fought their case through the different levels of the Russian justice system all the way to the European Court of Human Rights.
