“Bas Ya Bahar” is a masterpiece Kuwaiti film made in 1972. Directed by Khalid Al Siddiq, it shows a realistic interpretation of life in a conservative and religious society before the arrival of oil in the 1940s. The film offers a rare insight into a culture and history little-known of in the western world. The classic Kuwaiti film that won several grand prizes, tells quite a dramatic tale. The young son of an impoverished pearl diver has been forbidden to go to sea, because his father was crippled by a shark years before and does not want his son to suffer a similar fate. However, the boy cannot see any other way to make enough money to marry Nora, his beloved. Nora is the daughter of a merchant who wants her to marry for money.
