What Can We Do? (WCWD) is an online hub born out of COVID-19 to bring together all the ways people can help and support the UK – and each other. We aim to be the ‘go-to’ resource for people looking for ways to do their bit right from their sofa. We are a registered CIC (Community Interest Company), i.e. a social enterprise that uses funding for the public good.

WCWD aims to inspire and empower people to make the UK a better place for all through this crisis and beyond. Visit the website to see how we are doing this, https://whatcanwedo.world. We are also on social media: Instagram (@whatcanwedoworld), Facebook (@whatcanwedoworld), Twitter (@whatcanwedo7) and LinkedIn.

What Can We Do? is being updated constantly, we add new resources, blogs and campaigns to users to keep engaging and see that no matter who you are, where you are, how much time or money you have, there is always something you can do to make a difference.

Opportunity: Letters To Care Homes

Following on from the success of their first initiative, Letters for the NHS, The Crisis Project is now starting their second one called Letters To Care Homes.

This newest project allows volunteers to write to isolated residents in care homes who would really appreciate reading some kind words during this challenging time. Volunteers can upload their letters on our website and we ensure that as many older residents as possible receive these letters.

Opportunity: Sign up to be a charity shop volunteer

Want to volunteer, gain experience, and help charities to earn income that supports vital services? The Charity Retail Association (CRA) has launched a new initiative to match potential volunteers with charity shops when they reopen on or after 15 June.

With shops closed and most fundraising activities paused, charities face a big financial struggle to keep funding their services, which are more in demand than ever before. Many charities need their shops to reopen and start raising all-important funds again.

However, when charity shops start reopening we are anticipating that there will be a shortage of people to help out, as many existing volunteers will be unable to return straight away because of shielding, public transport issues, or just not wanting to leave their homes at this point. This initiative will help shops fill those gaps and allow potential volunteers an easy way to express an interest in contributing to the vital work that charity shops do in their communities and for their parent charities.

Members of the public who are potentially interested in volunteering can go to our platform and sign up in a very simple and short process. Charity retailers who have vacancies will then be able to interrogate the database and identify potential volunteers according to their location and specific charity interest (eg medical research, animal welfare etc).

Opportunity: Letters for the NHS

The Crisis Project is a campaign aiming to raise awareness and take action, harnessing the power of social media. Founded in 2020, The Crisis Project is fuelled entirely by emotion : compassion, kindness and courage. We believe in small personal sacrifices for the sake of others, whether that be time, money or attention. We believe that every tiny action contributes to revolution, no matter how small. And finally, we believe that time invested in the service of others is time well spent. Join us today, and use your voice to help us change the world. We have been recently featured in Time Out magazine and have been approached by film production companies to create a documentary. We were also approached by French channel TF1 for a feature.

Our flagship project is called Letters For The NHS. It aims to connect letter-writing volunteers with time to spare, to key workers who are holding our country together right now and deserve some extra support. We are looking for students to volunteer, nominate key workers they know to receive a letter of support, and follow our Instagram to help our initiative grow!

Opportunity: COVID-19 volunteering in boroughs across London

Across London, councils and community organisations have been setting up volunteer response teams to help during the COVID-19 outbreak. We’ve gathered up all the requests for help here.

Simply click on ‘Register Interest’ to get the whole list, find your borough, and then follow the links from there.

Opportunity: Translators Without Borders

The world is facing an unprecedented crisis of information. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 a global pandemic. The organisation called on individuals and entire nations to dramatically alter their way of life to contain the spread.

People urgently need access to accurate information in a language and format they understand to make well-informed decisions during this pandemic.

Opportunity: NHS Volunteer Responders

NHS Volunteer Responders has been set up to support the NHS during the COVID-19 outbreak. To do this we need an ‘army’ of volunteers who can support the 1.5m people in England who are at most risk from the virus to stay well. Our doctors, nurses and other professionals will be able to refer people in to NHS Volunteer Responders and be confident that they have been matched with a reliable, named volunteer.

Update - May 18 2020 - NHS Volunteer Responders have paused recruitment for the moment. You can view opportunities to volunteer with other organisations on our website at https://studentsunionucl.org/v…
