Octavia Foundation supports people affected by ill health, social isolation, low income or unemployment in central and west London.

As a Volunteer Befriender not only will you make someone feel confident and happy in life, you will find that you yourself have renewed confidence.

You will befriend a member of the local community in Westminster or Kensington and Chelsea who is isolated and vulnerable, by visiting them for an hour or two a week. You will encourage communication on a shared interest or topic, arrange activities and listen to your Befriendee with empathy and encouragement

We can provide references to employers and/or further education establishments.

Role Aim: 

To befriend a member of the local community in Westminster or Kensington and Chelsea who is isolated and vulnerable. To provide the Befriendee with emotional support, social skills and confidence that will make them feel happier in their everyday life.

Duties: 

To meet once a week with the person you have been matched with. Encourage communication on a shared interest or topic, arrange activities and listen to your Befriendee with empathy and encouragement.

Skills needed: 

• Good communication skills

• Understanding of empathy and the needs of people with isolation issues

• Understanding of Confidentiality

• Reliable and Trustworthy

• Able to use own initiative and work unsupervised

Training: 

Training includes Communication, Confidentiality, Empathy Policies and procedures. You will also receive direction on who to contact in case of emergency.

Location: 
Various locations across Kensington and Chelsea or Westminster, within the Befriendee’s home or at an agreed venue
Time commitment: 
1-3 hours per week
Opening times: 
Any day of the week, any time of day, as decided between the Befriender and Befriendee.
Once you’ve registered interest in this volunteering role, we’ll send your name and UCL email address to the organisation for their records. You’ll also receive information about the next steps to take if you do wish to take things forward. The organisation has signed up to our code of standards, which includes a commitment to protecting your data. We won’t share your information with anyone unless you’ve given explicit consent to.
