St John’s Hospice provides free care for over 3000 people and their families every year living with a long term illness in London. We aim to meet the medical, physical, social and emotional needs of our patients across a range of services. It costs around £5million to run all these services each year.

We are seeking volunteers to work alongside and support our Community Fundraising Team, with a passion to work hard and raise the funds needed to make a difference to the lives of our patients.

Volunteer Book Reviewer

We’re looking for committed and enthusiastic students (Masters or PhD level in a relevant discipline) to review new books on the Holocaust and genocide selected by the Library. All Volunteer Book Reviewers will attend an induction at the Library to learn about its history and our current work. Although this role can be completely remotely, Book Reviewers are encouraged to make use of the Reading Room and therefore will be made familiar with resources during the induction session. All articles will be proof read by a staff member before they are published online.

Wellbeing Volunteer

Take a central role in our prevention strategy. As a Wellbeing 360 volunteer, you’ll make phone contact with people who have previously been clients of Age UK Islington - checking in to see how they are and entering details of the call into a specially designed computer app. The service plays an invaluable role in identifying people who might be lonely or living in difficult circumstances, and providing appropriate support as a result. With volunteers and clients saying how much they enjoy making and receiving these phone calls, this is a popular and growing team.

As part of our social prescribing strategy, volunteers will help to research organisations that we connect clients to - e.g. social activities, helping with housing issues, transport options. This will involve research on websites, speaking to people on the phone and updating information on forms to accurately reflect the information that we need to let clients make an informed choice as to the support that’s available.

Join our Information & Advice Team to help people find solutions to problems and to connect to the support that they need. The Information service is based at our contact centre and enables adults of all ages to phone or drop in to find ways of resolving problems or to explore opportunities to improve their day to day lives. You will welcome people to the contact centre and direct them accordingly. Booking appointments and sending reminders, responding to information requests and completing research tasks is also part of the role.

Volunteer Steward

Bletchley Park, home of the code breakers, is credited with shortening World War 2 by two years breaking the Enigma code. Stewarding here means that you’re on the frontline interacting with our visitors, having exciting conversations about history and code breaking, looking out for our exhibits and protecting valuable collections. Don’t worry about the history – you don’t have to be a code breaker to work here! We’ll give you all the necessary training and support. Just have an enthusiasm for people, a friendly approach and interest in what happened here during WW 2.

Age UK Camden, Outreach Service are looking for friendly, organised people who are good at planning and have the confidence to facilitate small group activities and social gatherings for older people. These activities will usually be held at Supported Housing or Sheltered accommodation and are aimed at encouraging older people to engage and socialise in the places they live, using common space.

Friday Night Disco for Learning Disabilities Helper

Centre 404 is the place to be on a Friday night. Each Friday we host a disco for around 70 adults with learning disabilities. The live DJ and disco ball make the atmosphere amazing! We are looking for volunteers who are willing to come out fortnightly to help collect entrance fees at the door, monitor the tuck shop, and give water to those dancing the night away. Great fun!

The group of around 10 meet weekly to do light gardening work (weeding, watering, etc.) for an hour and then have an hour tea break to chat.
