City of London Open Spaces

The City of London manages almost 4,500 hectares of natural open space for public recreation and health. Our green spaces, most of which are charitable trusts, are run at little cost to the communities that they serve. Our spaces in and beyond the City of London have over 23 million visits each year.

Our Learning Programmes enable children to explore the curriculum in the beautiful outdoor setting of Hampstead Heath.

Sessions take place all-year–round during term-time on weekdays and last approximately 3 hours.

If you like the sound of the role and want to develop an understanding of children’s learning, gain first experience of some evaluations techniques and development and interpersonal skills simply get in touch. We’ll ask you a bit more about what you want to gain from the role and what you can bring and we’ll take it from there!

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working with children and enjoys working in a team of staff and volunteers.

You’ll meet new people, explore familiar places from behind the scenes.

We provide opportunities to socialise, celebrate and say thank you for your contribution.

And, you’ll be outdoors getting close to nature, which is good for your health and wellbeing.

Role Aim: 

The City of London Corporation’s Open Space Learning team believes the best way for children and adults to connect to Open Spaces is to experience them. Hampstead Heath Schools programme encourages pupils to explore this beautiful open space through inspiring learning outdoor sessions. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who could support our Primary Schools Officer and Education Rangers with the delivery of this programme.

Duties: 

Supporting the Primary Schools Officer and Education Rangers with the delivery of outdoor educational sessions and the logistical and practical elements of the school visits by:

• Organising equipment and other resources for various activities and re-setting or tidying these items after use.

• Supporting small groups of students during the activities.

• Welcoming school groups as they arrive

• Guiding visiting groups to our teaching spaces.

There will be opportunities to:

• Support the Schools Officer and Education Rangers when developing new sessions

Skills needed: 

We are looking for someone who is:

• Enthusiastic about learning in an outdoor setting

• Able to work in a team of staff and volunteers

• Comfortable being outdoors

• Interested in developing skills in working with children and young people.

Learning Pedagogy

Learning Volunteer into action (prep work before and after a session, RA and H&S, dynamics of teaching outdoor and how to deal with different age groups.

Opening times: 
Schools make bookings on a rolling basis, volunteers are informed of these dates and asked to attend when they can. There will be at least one session per week to support.
