About the organisation

Diabetes UK

Diabetes UK is the leading charity that cares for, connects with and campaigns on behalf of every person affected by or at risk of diabetes. We provide information, help and peer support, so people with diabetes can manage their condition effectively. We are one of the largest funders of diabetes research in the UK. As there are currently 3.5 million people living with diabetes and a further 549,000 who are currently undiagnosed. We rely heavily on volunteers to support the work our staff do. There are a variety of volunteering opportunities across London. Two of our most popular roles are Event Volunteering and joining our Speaker Scheme.

Diabetes is one of the biggest health problems facing not just the UK, but the world. We need your help to prevent some of these shocking facts:

* 3 people die from diabetes- related complications such as heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure every hour. That’s more deaths from diabetes than breast and prostate cancer combined.

* Finally, 10% of the NHS budget is spent on treating the complications of people with diabetes that’s £1m an hour.

There are currently 590,000 people who have diabetes and are currently unaware and at risk of life shattering complications. However, with good control and early diagnosis we can help to prevent the risk of complications. You can help us to make a difference by volunteering some of your time to raise awareness by attending health awareness and fundraising events across London.

Role Aim:

Events volunteers help raise awareness of diabetes and Diabetes UK at events around London.

Each event will vary but generally we will be looking for volunteers to:

* Engage members of the general public in a friendly and enthusiastic manner to raise awareness of diabetes and Diabetes UK

* Offer appropriate Diabetes UK publications/materials

* To motivate people who are at risk of diabetes to go their G.P for a diabetes test

* Answer general enquires and direct any medical or other specific questions to the appropriate member of staff

* Encourage people with diabetes to leave their details so that we can forward them further information

(And only at screening events):

* Engage those at risk of diabetes and encourage them to undergo a risk assessment on the unit

* Help manage the risk assessment queue.

Skills needed:

We look for enthusiastic and motivated volunteers.

We will provide a face-face briefing with a member of staff surrounding what diabetes is and the work of Diabetes UK. We will also include information about what we expect from event volunteers. Finally, they will be sent a event volunteer briefing pack and questionnaire to return to us.
