Terrence Higgins Trust

Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) is the leading HIV and sexual health charity in the UK working to reduce the spread of HIV and to promote good sexual health. We campaign for greater understanding of HIV and sexual ill-health, providing services across England, Wales and Scotland.

The Health Promotion team in Enfield are looking for a volunteer to help provide information and support around HIV prevention to individuals to communities in Enfield.

The right volunteer will help the team to:

• Provide short, factual presentations on HIV and/or the Terrence Higgins Trust.

• Run outreach stalls, both as a team, and independently to engage members of the community to take an HIV test

• Visiting barber shops and salons to run outreach sessions

• Raising awareness of HIV and the importance of safer sex and testing

• Facilitating partnerships with community organisations or faith groups

Desirable skills and experience

- Ability to engage effectively with Commercial Sex Workers Black African and the MSM community

- Romanian speaker (desirable)

- Confident and comfortable talking about HIV prevention and sexual health.

Commitment: 1 shift per week, 4 – 6 hours per shift for a minimum of 6 months after completing training.

Role Aim: 

To support the Enfield HIV prevention team by engaging with individuals and communities in Enfield to promote the importance of HIV testing and safer sex and signposting services.

Duties: 

• Providing short, factual presentations on HIV and/or the Terrence Higgins Trust

• Running outreach stalls, both as a team, and independently to engage members of the community to take an HIV test

• Visiting barber shops and salons to run outreach sessions

• Raising awareness of HIV and the importance of safer sex and testing

• Facilitating partnerships with community organisations or faith groups

• Promoting the Redbridge HIV Prevention Service and its activities

• Assisting in the delivery of workshops and activities

• Providing one to one information and support about HIV prevention

• Participating in THT’s training accreditation process

• Promoting other local sexual health services

Skills needed: 

- Ability to engage effectively with Black African or MSM communities in Redbridge.

- Excellent communication and active listening skills

- A basic understanding of the issues relating to HIV and AIDS, or willingness to learn

Training: 

All volunteers will be invited to completed the two day volunteer induction training. Additional ‘on the job’ training provided by the outreach team.

3-5 hours per week
Opening times: 
Various days across the week (flexible). Daytime, evening or weekend availability required.
