Salusbury WORLD Refugee Centre

Salusbury WORLD is a charity established in 1999 that supports refugee and asylum seeking children and families. Salusbury WORLD provides educational, social and emotional support for refugee children, and supports parents and the wider refugee community by providing home/school liaison, family workshops and outings, and also a comprehensive social advice service We work with local community organisations and schools to support their refugee students their families.

Salusbury World is a charity that supports refugee and migrant children and families in North West London.

We need play volunteers for our after-school club for children aged 4-11. Volunteers assist with organising materials, supervising the children, and participating in creative/sporting activities. We are looking for volunteers who can commit for at least one school term, for one session a week.

You need to be energetic, patient and friendly. You will have the satisfaction of contributing to a project that makes a real difference to children’s lives children and gain useful experience – you’ll also have fun!

Role Aim: 

The project aims to provide social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional support to children in a relaxed but structured play environment – and thereby improve refugee and migrant children’s self-esteem, confidence and enjoyment of life. Volunteers support the children and help to create the play environment.

Duties: 

• To help deliver arts and craft activities, games and sports activities to the children

• To help prepare in the preparation of activities including setting up the space and completing sample arts and crafts projects

• To supervise the children whilst they are participating in the activities

• To help tidy up at the end of the session

• To help prepare drinks and snacks

Skills needed: 

• A warm personality and a good sense of humour

• A sensitivity to other cultures and an ability to communicate successfully across cultures

• Reliability, patience and flexibility

• An ability to build good rapport with young people aged 4-11

• A commitment to equality & diversity and the rights of all individuals to respect and fair treatment

• Willingness and ability to share skills and knowledge with the children

• Confidence to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries

• A non-judgemental and supportive approach and belief in the potential of others.

Time commitment: 
3-5 hours per week
Opening times: 
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in term time only, beginning at 3.10pm and ending at 5pm.
