Spotlight; Hugo Fleming

Hugo Fleming; Modern Pentathlon

Hi, I’m Hugo and I’m a first-year PhD student on the Wellcome Neuroscience PhD programme, specifically researching the neuroscience of mental health. I actually compete in two different sports – my priority at the moment is athletics, in which I run the 800m, but I also compete in Modern Pentathlon, and in fact it was through pentathlon that I first got started in competitive sport.

Team UCL

We have more than 60 membership based sports clubs that make up Team UCL. Maybe you’re a swimmer, maybe you want to try your hand at Baseball or maybe you want to carry on Netball from your school days. You name it, we’ve got it. And if we don’t have it? Start it!

Phyllida Britton; Swimming

I’m Phyllida and I am a second year Chemist. I started swimming competitively when I was 9 years old and now I train at Ealing swimming club where I train 20 hours a week. I tend to focus on Freestyle- typically 400 and 800m.

Debbie Alawode; Weightlifting.

My name’s Deborah Alawode, I’m a 2nd Year Medical Student and I’ve been weightlifting for around 3 and a half years. My weightlifting career began after my coach did a 6-week taster course at my High School. At the end of the course, he asked if I’d consider training regularly at his club just down the road from my school. Since I thoroughly enjoyed the course, I decided to take him up on his offer.

High Performance Programme

High-Performance Programme

Team UCL High-Performance Programme is based within the Students Union on 15 Gordon St, we have a clear objective to become the best university for sport in London within the next 3 years. This objective is backed by Students’ Union UCL’s 2018-2021 strategy ‘125 and Beyond’. To help achieve this accolade the union have invested in performance support including strength and conditioning, physiotherapy and facilities to improve our competition performance and athlete experience.

Award-winning sport at UCL

Above all, we want the Students’ Union to be inclusive. We want to know that we are truly open to everyone and have opportunities that can be accessed by all students, not matter who you are, where you come from or what you enjoy. That’s why we are hugely proud to have been awarded the British University and College Sport (BUCS) Take a Stand award for inclusivity in sport.

Pride in Sport

Being active can be a great way to make friends and build confidence. And there’s no place on that pitch for discrimination.

Age: 22

Elite Athlete Sport: Rugby

Position: Hooker

My rugby career began at the age of 7 in my hometown of Hong Kong (HK). At the age of 13 I boarded at Harrow school in the UK, exposing me to a highly professional set up and I was able to learn first-hand from more senior students who are now competing at the very highest level. These include England Internationals Billy Vunipola and Maro Itoje.
