Mariyam Shoora Shafeeq
Hello, my name is Shoora.

I am a Natural Science student planning to major in astrophysics and neuroscience/biomedical sciences.

As a Natural Science student, I participate a range of classes across many courses organised by this faculty allowing me to get a basic idea of how the classes are like in most courses in this department. This makes me a good candidate to be your faculty rep as I am most likely to have sat through at least one class in most of the courses this faculty has to offer.

My main areas of focus would be the areas which showed the lowest student satisfaction according to the student surveys for the MAPS faculty in the years 2018 and 2019. I aim to investigate the reasons for such low student satisfaction in these key areas and advocate strongly to bring changes about as you want them. The areas I mainly want to aim to improve are:
1. Bring a solution to cater the large number of students who think that the staff have not made their subject interesting.
2. Find out why only 47.9% students agree that they have received helpful comments on their work and come up with a way to solve this issue in partnership with the students and faculty staff.
3. Organise and coordinate ways to help you feel part of a community of staff and students.
4. Make sure your feedback on the course has been heard and acted on. Also, keep you in the loop of exactly what had been done to act on your feedback.
5. Ensure that the career development opportunities on your academic course lives up to your expectations and are provided fair chances to participate in them.
6. If you are not fluent in English, I will work towards getting you appropriate support for your language needs.

I am always willing to listen to any complaints you may have about this department and be your voice in anything you want to advocate to the faculty staff about. I will work and coordinate with the faculty academics to bring the improvements that need to be brought about to make your learning time at UCL better and more fulfilling experience.

Feel free to contact me if you have any clarifications you would like to make about my manifesto or in general. You can either come talk to me in person whenever you see me or contact me using the mail below.

Manqi Li
Hi, my name is Manqi Li and I am running for the position of representative for undergraduate physics students.
I worked as a physics representative in the past year in UCL foundation course, during which I proactively help peers with their problems (both in life and study) and tried my best to make sure that everyone was on the right track. I also attended regular conferences and discussed feedbacks and thoughts of improvement to independent board. This experience not only helped me develop good relationships with students and professors, but also provided an opportunity for me to demonstrate my leadership capabilities.
If elected I would aim to
• Hold a series of social events (at least once a week) and get more people involved
• Fight for more funding and scholarship to be allocated in our department
• Discover more research opportunities for physicists and keep students notified
• Set up seminars once a week, and potentially invite speakers to discuss interesting topics related to our field of study
• Reach students regularly to listen to their thoughts and suggestions about this course
I think these aims will make some positive impacts because coming to university is not just about studying for a 1st honor degree, but also about making friends, having fun, and enjoying diversity in London. And what I intend to do is to make everyone study without pressure, and have fun.
Hajun Lee
Hi, my name is Hajun. I was a 2018-19 Ex department lead rep who worked with Nicoloa (Ex Faculty rep) to make all the department rep students entitled to go to the faculty meeting. It had an aim to make the voice of each department reported to the faculty directly.
It was a meaningful initiative and it triggered me to contribute something more to the faculty with hope to make meaningful outcomes for each department.
Amna Hussain
Hi! I'm Amna, running for the position of undergraduate faculty rep for Mathematical and Physical Sciences. I'm a 2nd year Natural Sciences student, so I've had plenty of opportunity to interact with other departments in the faculty and get people's thoughts and feedback.

My priority is the students. I simply want to improve the quality of our education. This includes making sure we have access to well-equipped teaching venues (i.e. not the Royal National Hotel...), making module selection and approval easier and quicker, ensuring feedback from tutorials/assessments/exams is prompt, etc.

If elected, I will ensure that all of your feedback and opinions are communicated to the faculty and acted upon as soon as possible. Thank you for your consideration!
Yuwei Zhu
Struggling to understand Classical Mechanics? Falling asleep during lectures? Feel like you don’t know many people on your course? These are only few of the problems I plan to resolve if you vote me as your Faculty rep for Mathematics and Physical sciences.

Hey everyone, I’m Yuwei 😊 (first year Physics) and regardless of whether I get the role or not, I’m always free to chat and meet new people, so please come up and say hi.

As a rep, I’ll always make time to listen to your views to improve your course. Your suggestions will always come before anything else.

I will dedicate myself to improve the following:

-Lack of break in back to back lectures by introducing more small breaks between or during lectures for napping/buying coffee

-Segregation among students from different backgrounds (more social events/icebreaking sessions)

-Student opinions not reaching union or teaching staff (using anonymous feedback forms put outside lecture theatres)

…and lastly, I’d also like to allocate a part of the university where undergraduate students can go to chill and socialize between lectures to bring us all closer together.

Please vote for me, if you have any questions, feel free to email me at yuwei.zhu.19@ucl.ac.uk
Khush Thakur
Hi my name is Khush Thakur. I’m a 3rd year astrophysics student and have been a course representative for the past two years. The MAPS department has suffered severe constraints within their facilitation of lectures as well as a lack of communication between the student voice, staff and higher roles within the university. As a faculty rep I will work closely with staff to ensure that a change is made to the arrangement of lecture theatres to ensure they are of a suitable standard for the classes being taught. I also aim to reform the way internal summer research projects and internships are made available in MAPS so that there is more access by students to get involved in roles corresponding to their skills and experience. I plan to do this by pushing departments in MAPS to introduce a new plan where staff advertise any open research/internship roles online or by email in a central location so that students with suitable attributes and qualifications can apply. This will hopefully make it easier to find internships as well all know can be very competitive and help staff to find students that best qualify to fulfil the task they need completed.
Laura Perez
University years are going to mark our future, and I believe that UCL has the responsibility to ensure that our !

As your representative I am here to DEFEND your needs and make sure the results YOU want are delivered.

- Invest on suitable study spaces, and subsidies for learning materials to ensure that students are fully equipped to strive academically. I believe that the proper environment and tools can go a long way into turning the study hours around!

- I will focus on representing your ideas and concerns to the faculty and Union to produce solutions that make an impact, not only making sure that feedback on coursework and lectures is taken into account, but also creating a mentoring scheme for extra help.

- I will also make sure that your preferences are prioritized in terms of modules, exams, and lecture rooms since students are the core aspect for the university's success and their opinions should be valued.

My experience as a Maths Representative has given me insight into the higher educational structure. The key point for a thriving outcome is maintaining a good flow of communication within all levels of the system.

- That´s why I would personally commit to having open hours for discussions in which students can openly discuss topics that they consider of importance or that should be improved, giving you more options to take part and speak out.

I look forward working to taking the MAPS faculty one step beyond, which is why YOUR vote matters!
Qinyu Li
Hi I’m Qinyu and I’m a second year studying Mathematics with Modern Languages.

As your representative, I will effectively communicate your feedback within our Mathematical & Physical Sciences Faculty and endeavor to improve your student experience.

- We need more exciting events like boat parties! I want to make everyone feel part of a community.

- I will communicate with each department to ensure lecture notes/revision material are accessible for each module.

- Many students only meet with their Personal Tutor every few months, and do not benefit much from these meetings. I want to make sure they are the people you can go to whenever you have concerns or need help.

Vote for me and I will make these possible!
