Morning Sessions

Session 1

A1

A1 Defining an excellent student experience at UCL

Derfel Owen and Edel Mahoney, UCL Academic Services

UCL needs to do more to improve the student experience. This brief session will offer students opportunities to inform a major project in the University to shape policies and regulations such as personal tutoring, how and when you are assessed, marking schemes, feedback on assessment and how degrees are classified.

B1 Equality? Pfffft We want LIBERATION Vicki Baars - UCLU

Discrimination doesn’t really happen on campus because surely educational institutions are forward thinking places, right? In an age were some of societies most vulnerable people have been awarded a swath of protections under the law what’s the point in campaigning for equality? There isn’t really anything left to be liberated from is there?

C1 The Engaged Library. Benjamin Meunier - UCL Library Services

This session will provide an overview of the new UCL Library Services Strategy, with a particular focus on services aimed at improving the student experience, and work underway to improve engagement between UCL students and Library Services. Download presentation here.

Session 2

A2 UCL ChangeMakers: Be Part of the Change Abbie King - UCL Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching

UCL is undergoing major change, not only in terms of its overarching strategy but also in how it engages all members of its community to shape its future direction. UCL ChangeMakers aims to create new opportunities for staff and students to work in partnership on the ideas, issues and projects that are important to them. It will also include things that people may already be doing together to improve the quality of the student experience. This initiative is not just about hearing your voice but giving you the tools, resources and power to actually implement those changes. UCL ChangeMaker Projects has been our first venture. But we want to do more. Download presentation here.

B2 Why is my Curriculum White? Hajera Begum - UCLU Download presentation here.

An interactive session focused on unravelling the Eurocentric nature of London’s Global University and its curriculum. We will look into what Whiteness is, why certain narratives are presented and others are suppressed, and the way in which Whiteness is visible throughout various disciplines.

.

C2 Making the most of your teaching administrator Valentina Hu and Stephanie Anyadi - UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences

In this workshop, we will explore the role of STaRS and teaching administrators and how they can collaborate to improve student outcomes and the student experience. Participants will identify and discuss potential opportunities for collaboration in their department. Download presentation here.

Session 3

A3 Educational Repairs and Malcom X Toyin Agbetu - Postgraduate student, UCL Department of Anthropology Download presentation here.

Can education neutrally produce knowledge for knowledge’s sake or should it overtly introduce social justice agendas accessible to all learners? This session is about using supplementary means to help motivate and realise the academic potential in students. It opens with a PowerPoint presentation looking at the transformative role of activism and informal education in the life of the Pan African, human rights advocate - Malcolm X. The second half of the session is a workshop where participants are encouraged to collectively help define alternative yet supplementary learning styles, spaces and curricula to formal institutions of education.

B3 Wikipedia as a Teaching & Learning Tool Raya Sharbain - UCL Management Science and Innovation Dr Mira Vogel - UCL E-Learning Environments

Wikipedia is an open, not-for-profit, crowd-sourced encyclopaedia that anyone can edit. It has enormous potential for students as a site for public authoring with a potentially huge readership, a place to collaborate widely on judgements about what is relevant and of high quality, and somewhere to contribute their knowledge in exchange for valuable life skills.

In early September 2014, UCL hosted the UK launch of the Wikipedia Campus Ambassador programme. Since then one department has included a Wikipedia assignment, and another has held a student edit-a-thon.This session will introduce Wikipedia and its Education Programme. It will briefly demystify the process of editing Wikipedia, and consider the role of the History and Talk pages attached to each article.

C3 The Connected Curriculum and the future of learning as determined by you Dr Brent Pilkey - UCL Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching Download presentation here.

In September 2014, UCL launched its far-reaching and ambitious strategy, The Connected Curriculum – a set of principles about good curriculum design in higher education and a catalyst for thinking about the whole student learning journey, as well as the opportunities students have as part of that journey. One of the main aims is to ensure that all students are able to engage in research at all levels of study, in line with the UCL 2034 strategy.

The student voice is paramount to the success of the initiative. So we want you to have a say in the future of learning at UCL!  Students will be encouraged to think about how their programme already fits with the initiative’s goals, and to also explore areas for improvement.

Session 4

A4 A web domain for every student? Dr Mira Vogel and Janina Dewitz - UCL E-Learning Environments

UCL’s Connected Curriculum agenda has a vision of students making connections with each other, academics and researchers, and producing assessed work for audiences beyond UCL. Consequently E-Learning Environments is scoping a pilot to give students a web domain of their own i.e. space on a server for hosting and selectively publishing files, and also for choosing, installing and running a range of software to suit their needs. The expanded range of applications would include software for storytelling, collaboration, and content management.

B4 Timely feedback towards better assessment Mary Mazzilli - UCLU Download presentation here.

This session will look at the quality,  the timeframes of feedback students receive at UCL , how this helps or hinders the assessment process. The aim of the session is to highlight major issues, possible solutions and will make comparisons with major national trends.

C4 How organised is your course? Tom Flynn - UCLU Download presentation here.

This session will look at the principles of effective organisation and management for degree programmes.  Participants will be introduced to a benchmarking tool which can be used to assess how well their degree programme is organised and managed.  The ten principles have been developed with students by the National Union of Students (NUS).

Afternoon sessions

What Next for Education at UCL?

In this session, you’ll use what you learn from the morning sessions, and from your own experience as a student, to examine what UCL should be doing to make student’s experience better. You’ll work with other participants to identify priorities and design solutions. After the conference, you’ll have the chance to continue working with us to make those priorities a reality.

Workshops sessions

By the end of the workshop, you also will understand in detail on how you can contribute to evaluating and assessing UCL,  where to find additional forms of evaluation (from external reports and findings) and how to use it.
