Conference Programme & Materials

Session 1

1A: Feedback & Assessment – Could Do Better
National Union of Students
Now updated. Assessment and feedback is a key part of your learning at university, but what does quality assessment and feedback look like? This session will give you an insight into the academic literature around assessment and feedback, looking at current debates around authentic assessment and dialogic feedback, as well as giving you the opportunity to benchmark your course against NUS’s ten principles of good feedback and assessment..

1B: Space to Learn - Engaging with students to create and manage successful Hubs - Download Presentation
UCL Library Services
The session opens with a powerpoint presentation looking at the traditional model of a research library - the Great Library at Alexandria. The second part of the presentation moves on to look at the new learning hubs being rolled out in UCL Library Services and elsewhere in UCL, and the services and facilities they offer.
The second half of the session changes into Workshop mode, with the Workshop attenders discussing all the models presented and identifying the best types of space, services and facilities to suit different learning styles

1C: Public Speaking Workshop - Download Presentation
UCLU
This session will cover some of the basic theories that constitute successful public speaking. Whether presenting academic work for assessment, securing funding or getting your point heard in a meeting, the skills you will gain in this workshop should set you in good stead for being more confident in your delivery.

Session 2

2A: How can your lecturer make feedback more helpful for you?
Many students say that feedback on coursework doesn't help them clarify things they haven't understood. This session gives them a chance to explain how they think feedback could help them understand their subject better. By the end of the session students will have agreed a list of recommendations which the session leaders can take to academic staff for further discussion and action.

2B: Students as Change Agents - Download Presentation / Download leaflet
UCL Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching

Do you think you can make a difference to how things work at UCL?

Of course you can! And we’re offering £500 funding to those who want to try.

'Students as Change Agents’ is a new scheme to be piloted next academic year (2014/15) at UCL. The idea of ‘Students as Change Agents' is to create opportunities for you to actively engage with your departments. We’re inviting you to undertake a piece of action research investigating an aspect of your education, or developing a new idea, that you have always thought would really make a difference to your, and other students’, experience at UCL.

This aim of this session is to explore 'Students as Change Agents’ with you. We would like your input on how you think this scheme should look, feel and run so that it is scheme very much owned by UCL students.

2C: Assertiveness Workshop - Download Presentation / Download handout
UCLU
Become a more confident and assertive communicator. This session focuses on body language and key techniques in sharing your opinion and dealing with conflict. Elements of this session have been covered by the StARs Advanced Training.

Session 3

3A: Anonymous marking and online assessment: your thoughts? - Download Presentation
UCL E-Learning Environments
UCL E-Learning Environments would like to take a sounding of student opinions on anonymous marking practices, towards understanding how these could be better supported by online assessment technologies.
Consecutive student representative bodies have campaigned for online assessment because it promises convenient submission, improved marking time, on-demand access to feedback, and anonymous marking. In response many higher education institutions, including UCL, have established online assessment processes. While remaining firmly committed to anonymous marking as a measure to reduce unconscious marker bias, in practice many UK higher education institutions are finding it tricky to balance several, sometimes competing, needs. In particular, the need to maintain student anonymity throughout the marking process (including external examining at the end of a course or module) can hinder staff and students discussing assessment feedback over time. What should UCL E-Learning Environments (ELE) feed back to Turnitin and Moodle? Are there ideas about how the competing needs could be balanced in the meantime?

3B: Liberating your curriculum! - Download Presentation
UCLU
This session will explore how curriculum design or content can have a positive or negative impact on the way students who experience oppression navigate and experience higher education. The session will predominantly explore Black and Minority Ethnic (BME), Disabled, Women and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) students' experiences.

3C: Campaigning Workshop - Download Presentation
UCLU
This session will cover an introduction to how you can take action to create change on the issues that you care about. This will include looking at how to start planning a campaign and the tactics you might want to use. This session will be interactive and elements will have been covered in the StARs Advanced Training.

Session 4

4A: That’s not a 2:1 – Grade Point Average - Download Presentation
UCLU
UCL is in the pilot group of universities look to adopt the Grade Point Average (GPA) system and replace the honours classification system for degrees, i.e. 1st, 2:1, 2:2 and 3rd.  This session will provide more information about what a UK GPA system would look like and the potential implications.  There will be discussions on the pros and cons to moving to this system of degree classification.  No matter if you are an undergraduate or postgraduate student, your views would be greatly welcomed during this session.

4B: There’s an app for that!
UCL E-Learning Environments
This is going to be a crowd sourcing session of the apps you use for productivity and learning.

4C: Negotiation Workshop - Download Presentation
UCLU
This session will focus on how to become a better negotiator. We’ll focus on ‘positions vs interests’, framing issues and agreeing your best and least acceptable outcomes. This session will be interactive and elements will have been covered in the StARs Advanced Training.
