The Cheese Grater magazine is UCL's award winning investigative and satirical publication that was  named 'London's Best Student Publication' by the Student Press Association in 2022 and our zine has been named 'Best Publication' at the most recent UCL Arts awards.

We combine our rigorous investigative journalism with dry wit and satire to produce a publication that is both loved and loathed. We also have an award winning sketch group and sister Zine publication!

The magazine has previously won Best Small Budget Publication at the Guardian Student Media Awards, Best Publication in London at the SPA awards, Best publication at the UCL Arts Awards, and a whole other range of accreditations and awards (just check our wikipedia).

If you want a place to start your journalism or comedy career, or just a place to socialise with likeminded people, join us! Our members have gone on to write and work for:

  • The New Statesmen
  • The Times
  • The Guardian
  • New Scientist
  • ABC News
  • The Tribune
  • The Independent

And other publications we cannot be bothered to list!

Our investigative journalists meet every Monday at 6pm to discuss the latest gossip and stories breaking on campus, we have investigated sexual assault and the eugenics scandal to UCL's commercialisation and decision to leave Stonewall. If you fancy being apart of the next award winning investigative team, or just enjoy a good gossip, this is the place for you!

Our satire and humour section meets every Tuesday at 6pm. They are committed to annoying all the right people through their superior dry wit and intellectual superiority, but seriously come along if you enjoy taking the piss out of everyone and everything (within strict editorial reason). Our creative journalists and graphic designers produce the cartoons of the week, caricatures, and the outlandish satirical articles.

In addition to the Investigations and Satirical sections of the magazine, we publish an independent feminist zine called Women's Wrongs. The Zine is published termly (or thereabouts) and provides a space for humour, essays, articles and cartoons with an intersectional feminist outlook, with members meeting every other Thursday to write and discuss. These two publications are accompanied by Cheese Grater's very own award winning comedy sketch group, the UCL Graters. The Graters formed in 2011 and have taken a show to the Edinburgh Fringe every year since (apart from 2020). They regularly organise and perform in mixed bills held in Mully's bar throughout the year and meet for a writing workshop every Wednesday. Get in touch to kickstart your comedy career.
