What do bikes, soap and plants have in common?

All of them were featured at the UCL Sustainability Fair and Marketplace this month!

Run by the Volunteering Service and Green UCL, the Fair attracted environmentally conscious students and staff members alike, featuring stalls run by student volunteering societies and eco-friendly companies such as Olio and Lush. Visitors had the opportunity to try out ethical products, sign up to environmentally-minded programs and campaigns, and participate in a clothing exchange. Student activist groups such as Fossil Free UCL and Zero Food Waste UCL came along to raise awareness of current environmental issues and encourage students to give a little of their free time to help reduce the university’s carbon footprint. Charities from outside of UCL also came in to present their work combating environmental issues in the wider London area, hoping to get more students involved in sustainable volunteering.

UCL’s Fashion society had a particularly innovative way of combating the fashion industry’s waste by organising a clothing swap. Students had the choice between donating their unwanted clothes in exchange for someone else’s second-hand clothes, or purchasing donated items directly from the stand. This was popular among students wanting to look fashionable on a budget while being sustainable at the same time!
